Where in the world does cigar tobacco actually grow, and why does it matter?

Nearly all cigar tobacco grows in a narrow belt through the Caribbean basin and Central America, where three conditions overlap: no winter, near-constant humidity around 70%, and rich volcanic or river-valley soil. What does the plant actually need from a place to grow well?

Tobacco destined for cigars is fussier than it looks. It needs a growing season of consistent warmth with no cold snaps: a single frost can ruin a broadleaf crop outright, which is a big part of why cigar tobacco doesn't grow at the latitudes where most agriculture happens. Rainfall has to arrive on a schedule, not just in volume. The plant needs steady water through a growing period of roughly three to four months, then a drier stretch right around harvest. Why does the wrapper leaf often come from a different place than the filler inside the same cigar?

Because wrapper leaf is asked to do a different job. It's the outermost layer, so it needs to be thin, elastic and evenly coloured, with minimal visible veins, qualities that come from growing the plant under cover. Growers stretch cheesecloth tents, sometimes called shade cloth, over entire fields to filter direct sunlight, which produces a thinner, silkier leaf with less pronounced flavour of its own.

Filler and binder leaf, by contrast, is usually grown in direct sun. Full sun produces a thicker, oilier leaf that contributes most of a cigar's actual strength and flavour rather than its appearance. Is the "tobacco belt" a strict line on a map, or something looser?

Looser than the phrase suggests. In principle, the zone between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn covers a huge stretch of the planet, but cigar tobacco is actually concentrated much more narrowly than that: mostly the Caribbean islands and a strip of Central America, plus a few outlying pockets elsewhere.

The clearest proof that it's about conditions rather than a strict band is Connecticut. The Connecticut River Valley sits at roughly 41°N, thousands of miles north of the tropics, with real winters. Does knowing where a cigar's tobacco grew actually tell you anything useful?

Leaf from the sheltered Dominican valleys tends to run milder and sweeter. Wrapper from Ecuador or Cameroon tends to contribute more subtlety than intensity.
