What humidity and temperature should I actually keep my humidor at?

Most cigar smokers settle on 68-70% relative humidity and roughly 18-21°C (65-70°F), because that range keeps tobacco's natural oils active without inviting mould. The exact number matters less than steadiness: a humidor swinging between 60% and 75% stresses the wrapper more than one holding a steady 65%.

Why 68-70% and not some other number?

Tobacco leaf is hygroscopic — it absorbs and releases moisture depending on what's around it. Below roughly 62%, the leaf dries out enough that the oils responsible for aroma and slow combustion stop moving freely. The wrapper turns brittle, cracks appear near the cap, and the burn speeds up and goes harsh. Above about 72%, the leaf holds more water than it can use. Draw gets heavy, the cigar burns unevenly or won't stay lit, and the excess moisture becomes a growing medium for mould.

68-70% sits in the middle of that window on purpose. It's not a magic figure — plenty of experienced smokers run their storage a point or two either side of it permanently and never think about it again. It's simply the range where most tobacco, cured and rolled under fairly standard conditions, behaves the way it was built to behave.

Does temperature matter as much as humidity?

Less on its own, but it changes what humidity does. Cigars are usually kept at 18-21°C. Push much past 24°C at the same relative humidity and you raise the risk of tobacco beetle eggs hatching — they're dormant in most leaf and activate with warmth. You'll also get faster oil migration, which is the greasy sheen sometimes seen on cigars that have sat in a hot room; it's usually harmless but a sign storage ran warmer than it should have.

Go too cold and the leaf simply slows down — nothing dangerous happens, but the cigar won't age or open up the way it would at room temperature. The practical rule: keep the room the humidor lives in reasonably stable, out of direct sun, and away from radiators or exterior walls that swing with the weather outside.

What actually happens if humidity swings instead of sitting still?

This is the part most advice skips. A cigar sitting constantly at 62% adapts to 62% — the leaf reaches equilibrium and stays there. A cigar that swings from 60% to 75% and back every few days never reaches equilibrium. Each swing expands and contracts the wrapper leaf at a different rate than the binder and filler underneath it, because they're different leaf types with different densities. Do that repeatedly and you get hairline wrapper cracks, unravelling seams, and cigars that taste "off" for reasons that have nothing to do with the tobacco itself.

This is why a cheap desktop humidor with a bad seal often does more damage than a slightly-off but stable large one: it isn't the average humidity that's the problem, it's the range it travels across to get there.

Does the right number change by cigar or by climate?

A little, but not enough to plan around unless you're deliberately ageing something long-term. Thicker ring gauges and darker, oilier wrappers tolerate slightly higher humidity better than thin, pale wrappers, which dry out and crack faster at the same conditions. If you live somewhere naturally humid, your humidor will drift upward between top-ups; somewhere dry, it'll drift down. Neither is a problem — a well-sealed humidor with a working humidification system corrects for it. How do I actually hit that range day to day?

Three things do almost all the work: a working seal, a humidification device sized to the box, and a hygrometer you trust.
